Although it is commonly referred to as the Dali Monastery, its full name is Druk Sangag Choling Monastery. This is the name clearly displayed on its outer wall as you approach it from the road and pass through its main gate.

On the Hill Cart Road, the huge monastery is located on the side of a hill south of Darjeeling town. It is magnificent and stunning when viewed from the other slope. Built on many storeys, with white structures in the traditional Tibetan style. The paintings and murals enhance the beauty and appeal of the monastery.

Dali Monastery, established in 1971 by 1st Kyabje Thuksey Rinpoche, is one of the most important monasteries of the Drukpa Order. This monastery is home to around 300 monks who come from the Himalayan area. More significantly, it serves as the Drukpa Lineage’s headquarters.

Best time to visit Dali Monastery...

The best time to visit Darjeeling is generally around the months of October – November in autumn, December – January – February in winter, March – April in spring. However, tourists used to visit Darjeeling throughout whole year.

When you enter through the arch gate and proceed up the ramp, the architecture of the buildings will surprise you. The ornate entry door, the vibrant murals on the walls, and the huge Buddha are all breathtaking. You’ll soon have to climb numerous flights of steep stairs to reach the prayer hall.

As you proceed, there will be a prayer place on your right. The most popular element of this Monastery that draws big audiences is the Hall of massive, cylindrical 6 ft high golden Tibetan Prayer Wheels that the Monks continually rotate while giving their Prayers. The sound of singing and humming creates a wonderful spiritual environment. Continue going up until you reach a large open flat area.

There is a school within this massive monastery, and you may observe numerous children going in with their school uniforms and backpacks. Throughout the area, you may observe children and young men dressed in Buddhist garb learning, playing, and worshipping.

Kunga Paljor Coffee Shop: If you go to the right of this huge open terrace area, you’ll find a cafe with a souvenir shop inside the monastery grounds. The Kunga Paljor Coffee Shop provides tea, coffee, as well as cold beverages, and vegetarian snacks like as momos, idly,  potato chips, and so on. Although the cuisine is of ordinary quality, if you have time and would want to relax in a calm and pleasant environment while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, this is the place to go. The meal is served by a tiny, passionate, and highly kind monk, and the rates are fairly cheap for a short bite.

The Monastery’s Library also has a large collection of literature on Buddhism and Philosophy. The Dali Monastery is well-known for its Buddhist murals, paintings, manuscripts, and archives. Dalai Lama Visit: This Monastery also had the wonderful pleasure of hosting His Highness the Dalai Lama for three days in 1993, when he spoke about different aspects of Tibetan Buddhism and culture. The current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, visited the gompa in 1993 to disseminate Buddha’s teachings in the region.
