Roy Villa : Tracing the Footsteps of Legends

Roy Villa’s story is intricately woven with the lives of legendary figures who left an indelible mark on India’s history. Most notably, it was the abode of Sister Nivedita, a Scottish disciple of Swami Vivekananda who dedicated her life to social reform and education in India. Her spirit still permeates the walls of Roy Villa, and visitors can almost hear her passionate pronouncements echoing through the corridors.

Originally constructed in 1890 by Dwarakanath Roy, a prominent businessman, Roy Villa was once a private residence exuding colonial grandeur. However, its destiny took a turn in 1913 when it was purchased by Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, a renowned botanist and physicist.

Recognizing its potential for a greater purpose, Bose gifted the property to the Ramakrishna Mission in 1938. Today, Roy Villa stands as the Ramakrishna Mission Nivedita Educational and Cultural Centre, a beacon of education and cultural exchange that continues to inspire and uplift the community.

Sister Nivedita visited Darjeeling on seven different occasions and breathedher last in this building on 13^th October, 1911 after murmuring the immortal words ; “The frail boat is sinking, but I shall yet see the Sun Rise”

The sweet solitude in the field of the lush green beauty of the hill town, Darjeeling, attracted Swamiji so much that he visited this hill resort on five occasions.

This is the house where the foundation stone of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute was laid by the then Prime Minister Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru in presence of the then Chief Minister ofWest Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, Governor Dr. Haren Mukherjee, the legendary mountaineer, Tenzing Norgay, Principal Maj. N.D. Jayal and Indira Gandhi, on November 4, 1954. Later on the Mountaineering Institute was shifted to its present location on 25^th December 1957.

Roy Villa was undertaken by the Government of West Bengal and was handed over to the Ramakrishna Mission by the existing Government of West Bengal on May 16, 2015. The keys to this mansion were handrd over to the mission on july 10, 2013.Hon’ble Chief Minister, Mamta Banerjee ceremoniously inaugurated the renovated House on January 22, 2014.
